Photographs

Journal Entry: Photographs

Every photograph of you is potentially a photograph of you as a corpse, because who knows what photograph they will choose when you’re gone, the photo that will serve as an exclamation point, or a question mark, or a simple period on your obituary.

But what if you did know, somehow? What if for some reason you knew the moment the photo was taken that it would be the photograph they publish along with your obituary after you die?

Obituaries provide mundane answers to simple questions, most of the time. But there is never anything simple or mundane about a photograph unless you have lost your ability to guess at the life that surrounds that moment in time. It is always a life you could not guess at, but sometimes a life is more unthinkable than you can ever imagine.
